Rumors: They Hurt Everyone

Deviating from my usual writing/books discussions to talk about rumors. You know what those are right? We've all spread them. We've all gossiped at some point. Don't deny it, because if you do, you're lying to yourself. Whether it was a friend who told you a secret, asked you not to tell anyone, then you turned right around and told. Soon, the news was all over the place and your friend looks at you with hurt in her eyes. Or, that annoying family member who gets under your skin and you just really want to tell someone about her/him. Soon, you're telling everyone nasty things about this person and then you wonder, "gee, why is she so mad at me?"

The thng is, I've recently been the butt of some rumors and I know how much it hurts to know someone has been talking about you. To know that someone you considered a friend was really anything but! It taught me a hard lesson. So, as a writer I wrote a poem about it in the hopes that maybe next time you feel compelled to stab someone in the back, you might think twice, because Karma is a bitch with a keyboard...

Rumors:
A shame so senseless,
with a tongue-tangled mouth.
It’s a crime to swill
the drink of the remorseless.
We toss out this bait,
Spewing out the gossip,
quenching our avid lust
all just to feed the hate.
Oh, and you might think you know who I'm talking about, but I can guarantee you...you don't have a clue.

  1. Thought provoking post. It is an awful little world out here. I try my best to remeber to believe half of what I see, and nothing of what I hear unless it is told directly to me from that person. But it is tough. As women, we are social and gossip comes with the turf. I'd rather here good gossip though, bad stuff alwyas makes me feel bad for the person and it boggs up my brain. Tellme about kids getting awards, people getting married, but save the back biting and bitterness for others. I have enough of that in my family- I can't chose them, I can chose my friends.
So I know how you feel, have been there too and hope I never put someone in that position as an adult.

  3. I'm sorry to hear this Tami. I know that there is lots of jealousy and pettiness out there and sadly, most of us get sucked into it by some degree.

I think this industry can be as dark as it is light. I hope that I continue to learn from stuff like this because I also know how much it hurts, however I'm not perfect, so I have to constantly remind myself that it's better to find out the truth before spreading the rumor. Hugs to you.
