She will test his allegiance…
As the captain of the red guard, Dyre is aware that most Zenarians fear him. He’s often been forced to use that fear to uphold the six laws and protect the Zenarian race. With the rebel faction increasing their numbers every day, all his focus is centered on securing the mountain they call home from any and all threat. When he spots a human female much too close to their border, Dyre quickly captures her. His intention to interrogate the pretty brunette goes up in smoke the instant his wings encircle her small, curvy body. She stirs his creature. When Dyre notices the cuts and bruises littering her fair skin, he breaks protocol and brings her home.
Jade is on the run from the law. Or more accurately, the law according to Granger Wasser. As sheriff of Macone County, Granger has appointed himself judge and jury and everyone in town is too afraid to oppose him. When Jade turns down his marriage proposal, it sets off a chain reaction that forces her to flee to parts unknown. Imagine her surprise when she runs smack into a crimson-winged alien! His gentle touches ignite her blood and Jade wants nothing more than to surrender to the wildfire brewing between them. Still, Dyre is a man. And trusting a man is how she ended up falling down the rabbit hole, to begin with.

gaze
filled with fear when she saw Arwen sitting on the bed next to her. Her
breathing increased when she spotted Dyre and the other males that surrounded
her in the small room. Her mouth opened, then closed just as quickly. She paled
and he could see panic set in.“You
are in no danger,” he softly explained. “You’re safe here.”
She
blinked at him but said nothing. Her gaze darted toward Arwen, then to Trask
and Havak. She didn’t scream. Dyre wasn’t sure what he expected from her, but silence
wasn’t it.
Arwen
reached out and took the female’s hand. “Easy, we mean you no harm.”
She
tried to sit up but flinched. Her lips thinned and she held herself rigid, more
evidence of her pain. Dyre placed a hand on her arm to keep her from attempting
it again. “Stay down, female,” he ordered. “You’ve been badly injured.”
“I’ve
been badly beaten, you mean, and who are you?” she paused then added, “I honestly
thought angels would have long white robes and pretty white wings.” She studied
him and a single brow quirked upward. “Unless I didn’t go to the good place.
Damn, it was that time I stole Joey Sullivan’s lunch money, wasn’t it? Listen,
he was a jerk and it was payback. Surely that counts for something.” She
started to sit up again, but she was weak and Dyre was stronger. She frowned at
the hold he had on her. “Stop doing that.”
He
leaned close and hissed at her. “I don’t know where you think you are, but we
aren’t…angels.”
She
regarded each of them again, before bringing her gaze back to him. “I am dead,
right?” She touched her chin and cursed. “That hurts like a mother. Okay, not dead
then. Dreaming?” She nodded. “That must be it. Like a really weird concussion
type of dream where angels have red wings and a major medieval Vikings vibe. Of
course, I couldn’t just have a nice normal dream about the hereafter. No, I
have to dream about sexy red-winged angels.” She offered Arwen a rueful smile.
“Not that you aren’t every bit as gorgeous with your brown wings and all.”
Arwen
chuckled. “Thank you.”
Dyre
glared at their healer. “She obviously suffered a severe blow to her head because
nothing she’s saying is making sense.”
Trask
cleared his throat. Dyre snarled at the male. “You have something to add?”
He
shrugged. “I've read some of the Earth-born fiction books Clari is always carting
around. I believe the female thinks she’s died and passed onto littariuss. She thinks we are celestial
beings.”
Dyre’s
wings expanded, catching the Earth-born’s attention. “We are not what you
think.”
She
stopped struggling against his hold and flopped back onto the bed and closed
her eyes. “Stick a fork in me, because I’m done.”
Dyre
rolled his eyes at the weird phrasing. “What is she babbling about now?”
Arwen
placed a soothing palm on her cheek. The Earth-born popped her eyes open and
stared at their healer. Arwen cocked her head to the side. “Perhaps you could
tell us your name.”
“Jade,”
she quickly answered, her voice as soft as the yellow flowers that grew around
the lake near Grader's Pass.
Arwen
ran her hand down to her chin. She kept it there for a few seconds before
removing it. “My name is Arwen. Do you remember what happened to you, Jade?”
The
female touched the spot that the healer had administered to. “That feels
better. Some of the pain is gone. You did that before, didn’t you?”
“Yes.
I can do more if you let me.”
The
female turned her attention on him. “And what about you?”
He
got to his feet and crossed his arms over his chest. “I’m the one who found
you.”
Her
gaze went on a journey over him. His body responded when she stopped a few seconds
too long on his groin. Her gaze met his and Dyre was momentarily struck by the deep,
chocolate color. “Found me?” she asked, her confusion clear in the way she
watched him.
He
nodded. “You were unconscious in the woods.”
Something
passed through her brown eyes and she bit her lip. To Dyre, she appeared
afraid. “Granger,” she ground out.
Dyre
cocked his head to the side. “What is that?”
She
touched a finger to her lip and winced. “Not what, who. And he’s a
horrible excuse for a human.”
“He?
A male did this to you?” Dyre instantly wished to seek him out. He would
inflict great pain on him before he allowed death to find him.
